Analyze External Data in Excel

You can use PivotTables, PivotCharts, and Slicers to analyze information outside of a spreadsheet. The External Data can come from Microsoft Access, from the Internet, or from a server or mainframe. Microsoft Excel can also connect to a SharePoint server.

The following pages will show how to connect a PivotTable to a mighty Microsoft Access database that has a table of customers, tblCustomers.

1. Try This: Insert a PivotChart

Open the a new, blank spreadsheet.

Go to Insert-> Table-> PivotTable.

Click on PivotChart.

Go to Use an external data source.

Click on Choose Connection.

Keep going...

Memo to Self: This lesson uses a sample Microsoft  Access database. If you are not familiar with Access, or if you do not have Access on your computer, you may not be able to practice these steps. That is OK.
